Our Head Start program provides high-quality, comprehensive early learning experiences for children ages 3–5, preparing them for lifelong success.
The Head Start Substitute Teacher supports classroom operations in the absence of the regular teaching staff. The substitute provides a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for children, helping maintain continuity of care and learning. Working under the direction of the Center Supervisor and Lead Teacher, this position ensures that daily routines and lesson plans are carried out according to Head Start standards and The Improvement Association’s policies.
Support and assist with classroom activities that promote children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.
Follow established lesson plans, routines, and daily schedules to maintain consistency in the learning environment.
Supervise and ensure the safety of all children at all times.
Help maintain a clean, organized, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment.
Assist children with meals, toileting, rest, and other daily care routines.
Communicate effectively with staff, children, and families while maintaining confidentiality.
Participate in staff meetings and professional development as requested.
Required: High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred: Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or coursework in Early Childhood Education.
Experience working with preschool-aged children in an early childhood or Head Start setting is preferred.
Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to different classroom environments.
Must meet all Head Start and state licensing requirements, including background checks and health screenings.
Active early childhood classroom setting with children ages 3–5.
May be called on short notice to fill in at various Head Start sites within The Improvement Association’s service area.
Hourly rate based on experience and education.

Under the guidance of the Center Supervisor or Lead Teacher, the Substitute Teacher Assistant helps maintain a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where children can learn and grow.
Support the Lead Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate lessons and activities.
Supervise and engage with children in classroom, playground, and mealtime settings to ensure safety and positive interaction.
Follow daily schedules, routines, and guidance from regular classroom staff to maintain consistency for children.
Assist with classroom setup, cleaning, and organization.
Provide support for children’s personal care routines, including meals, toileting, and rest time.
Maintain confidentiality and promote respectful, positive communication with children, staff, and families.
Ensure compliance with Head Start and state licensing standards.
